Yep, Waterfire... not to be confused with Firewater. Big difference.
Throughout the summer, Columbus lights bonfires on the Scioto River. Why, you ask? Well, their mission statement goes a little something like this... "to provide a unique spectacle that brings family and friends together while enjoying music, bonfires and riverfront entertainment". Let me tell you, they do not disappoint. You may be thinking it doesn't sound that cool, and I get that. But I gotta say it's a great thing to do on a Fri or Sat evening with the fam in the nice summer air. All you pay is $4 for parking (in the COSI lot, for you locals). If you like to eat non-stop like I do, bring your own dinner/snacks or buy something from a vendor when you get there.
Sometimes the music lineup consists of the Columbus Children's Choir, while other nights it's an 80's band with bad hair. There's definitely something for everyone. Folks line the outdoor amphitheatre walls with their favorite camping chairs or blankets and settle in for some free entertainment. At dusk, the music stops and they begin to light the bonfires one by one by two boats full of volunteers. Once all the fires have been lite, the music resumes and the smell of smoke makes it way through the crowd. Now that is what I call a nice summer evening.
Here, I'll even give you the burn schedule for the rest of the summer:
Friday, July 13th
Friday, September 28th at Riverfront Arts Festival
Musical act to be announced
Saturday, September 29th at Riverfront Arts Festival
Musical act to be announced
Gates open at 6:30 p.m. Live music begins at 7:30 p.m. and the fires are lit at 8:30 p.m. The live music resumes at 9:00 p.m. and the evening concludes at 10:30 p.m.
Pick a night and experience one of the many things we love about this city!
